The Matter 1.0 Standard Is Here to Fix Smart Homes’ Biggest Problems

The Matter 1.0 standard has finally arrived after a long and painful wait. It promises to bring full device interoperability to smart homes—if two devices support Matter, they will work together regardless of their branding. Matter uses Thread to increase your home’s responsiveness and range.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has developed Matter, a protocol previously known as Zigbee Alliance. It combines the best of Zigbee, Thread, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth LE to serve as a “universal translator” for smart home products.

Essentially, Matter solves smart homes’ biggest problem—device incompatibility. And you don’t need to download any new apps or voice assistants to unlock this functionality, as Matter will be built into Google Home, SmartThings, Alexa, and HomeKit in the coming weeks or months.

HomeKit users must be familiar with Thread protocol, which is part of the Matter standard. This should increase your smart home’s range and responsiveness. Google asserts that Android is able to automatically identify nearby Matter devices and set up a simple setup.

Matter already has hundreds of products. These products will receive updates that enable Matter support once they have passed the certification process. As the CSA developed its Matter protocol, we expect big brands such as Amazon, Google, Samsung and Apple to be among those first to receive certification.

Google’s redesigned Home app now supports Matter compatibility. This redesign will soon be released in a preview to the public. Presumably, Matter won’t feel “real” until updates like these hit consumers’ devices.

It is likely that smart home brand will release Matter-related press releases during the week. Stay tuned to this article, or sign up for our newsletter free Receive any new updates via the newsletter
